As soon as you enter O?Brian?s, you are hit with cool, clean air. Yes, the air-conditioning really works. After a hot day tracking around Bali, shopping, or just perspiring by the pool, it is a most welcome change!
O?Brian?s has all the things you hope to find in a pub; a good bar with many stools, tables for those who feel more comfortable to be so seated, a pool table, relaxing music and friendly smiling staff.
But O?Brian?s is much more than just a pub!
Pub grub it has, it is also a place for very serious eating. What is more, the prices are quite amazing for a leading hotel, as they seem to be at all of Balihai?s food outlets.
Good finger food such as Chicken Nuggets [with French Fries and Sauce Tartar, of course], Hamburgers [this has the works; bacon, egg, onion and cheese], Crispy Chicken Wings. Whilst there is a Grilled Ham & Cheese Sandwich, the other sandwiches are a bit more unusual. The ?Sandwich? is toasted Sour Dough bread, stuffed with crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato and onion. A Seaside Tri-Level Club Sandwich has grilled lemon chicken breast, avocado and asparagus on wonderful corn bread!
No decent pub could ever exist without serving their version of Bangers and Mash. Here the sausages come with an onion parsley gravy. The Breaded Calamari Rings, accompanied by a Baked Potato stuffed with bacon and sour cream, is also an acceptable bar feed! Or, for that matter, so are the Fish & Chips! The thin crispy Pizzas also make perfect finger food.
There is a selection of good salads and interesting soups [A Lobster Minestrone no less], or you can sit at the bar with a good Antipasto Selection [cured meats, grilled marinated vegetables, seafood, cheese and olives] or a plate of Sweet Potato Fries.
For the serious food, you had better take a table, sit down and enjoy a real meal. O?Brian?s Lemon Chicken seems to be one of their most popular dishes. A Half Chicken is oven baked, then served with a wine and mustard sauce, with new potatoes and veggies. Simple food, done very well!
The Grilled Pork Spare Ribs have been marinated in an oriental sauce mix, and then served with salad and fries. The Prawns Saganaki have been baked in a tomato coulis with fetta cheese, and come with steamed rice to soak up that tasty sauce.
Other seafood dishes include pan-fried Snapper, with a simple parsley sauce, or fillets of Red Mullet that arrive with a pile of scallops, sitting in a ?beurre rouge? sauce.
But Beef seems to be the main attraction here at O?Brian?s! The Bruggerman Special is cubes of beef tenderloin that have been tossed in black pepper, seasoned then seared. However most of the Steak dishes are served on hot sizzling Lava Stones. You select your own cut of meat [tenderloin, ribeye or rump, imported or local], and pay by weight. All steaks are pre-seasoned and served with baked potatoes and a selection of sauces, on the side, with which you can experiment. Let them cook in front of you, for as long as you like!
If you still cannot make up your mind, then there is always the Three in One! Beef Tenderloin and Mushrooms, Lamb Chop and Chilli, and cubes of Lobster in Butter.
If you are still hungry [?] there is always the dessert selection, ice creams, cakes and tarts.
All in all, great value in the most pleasant of locations. If you want an added bonus to start your evening early, then come at 4.00 p.m., and take advantage of the Happy Hour prices!
