Milk & Madu.....

Fresh and clean!

Fresh, clean and good value too!

The area around the Canggu Club is now awash with warungs, cafes and restaurants. Sadly most of the menus are same-same, a mix of the same local dishes and worse still local versions of how they think international cuisines should be prepared and served.

Then Milk & Madu arrives on the scene with something completely different! Relaxing but with style, the food both healthy and tasty, and at a price that everyone can afford. As was the case with their other restaurant Watercress [our Best New Cafe of 2013], it has been an instant hit!

Their interesting breakfasts [they must have the biggest breakfast menu in Bali] are served from an amazing 7.00 a.m, so even early enough for Bali workers!

Skillet Eggs with charred sourdough bread are served with your choice of extras; crisp bacon, roast mushrooms and gruyere or sautéed potato, crumbed chorizo, marinated peppers, parmesan and thyme, etc.

A selection of breakfasts served with that tarragon-intense Hollandaise sauce include Benedict and Florentine or the Madu Special of poached egg with smashed avocado, crispy bacon, onion jam & hollandaise. The elusive perfect poached egg [firm white with soft golden yolk, difficult to find anywhere in the world] is an attractive centre piece and the Dukkah Poached Eggs with crisp polenta, marinated peppers, watercress and feta is just about perfect!

The breakfast options continue. A touch of Mexico is their Burrito but this one is stuffed with scrambled egg, beans, bacon, corn salsa, cheddar, avocado & sour cream. If you are a fan of sourdough bread then choose between the simple Grilled Cheese Toasty with caramelized onion & cheddar cheese ir the more complex Goat?s Cheese with confit cherry tomatoes, Spanish onion, olive oil, sea salt & lemon.

Even sweet breakfasts are available, Charred French Toast with strawberries, candied walnuts & honey cream or Upside Down Pancake of mango with the buttermilk pancake, yogurt & maple syrup.

For lunch you can have a Gourmet Burger on Brioche [grilled Moroccan chicken breast with marinated peppers, tatziki & spicy harissa mayo]. Burgers seem to be the 2015 story in Bali, everyone is doing them, some better than others. Watercress came up with a sensational burger when they opened in 2013, a Mahi-Mahi Burger, I could not believe a fish burger could be so good. Now at Milk & Madu their Soft Shell Crab Burger is threatening to become their signature dish! The soft shell crab has been prepared tempura style in a light rice flour batter with sriracha mayo [hot chilli], slaw & fresh coriander added. A burger with a crunch!

The Tortilla Wrap is of roasted lamb with marinated aubergine, cucumber, mint, aioli, feta, red onion & greens. Just as good is their Lemon Roasted Chicken, celery, apple, carrot, cranberries, house mayo & greens. There are many vegetarian options here including a Wrap with Falafel, cucumber, mint tatziki, hummus, tabouli, tahini dressing & greens.

Flatbread Pizza [French brie, caramelized onion, sweet dates & wilted rocket], or Vegetarian [marinated aubergine, grilled zucchini, mint, basil & feta], but I like the naughty one - French brie, caramelized onion, sweet dates & wilted rocket.

The Baked Rigatoni is with smoked Atlantic salmon, fresh lemon, capers, crème fraiche, dill & parmesan. Smoked Atlantic Salmon can also be had as a centre piece with fresh lemon, capers, crème fraiche, dill & parmesan.

There are even interesting salads [quinoa with cucumber, marinated capsicum, cherry tomato, kalamata olives, capers, red onion, marinated feta, garden herbs, fresh lemon & house dressing] and a very healthy House Special of honey roasted pumpkin, marinated capsicum, rocket, cucumber, avocado, sun-dried tomato, snow peas, mint, dried cranberries, pumpkin seeds & crushed almonds, quite sensational!

The Kids Menu at Milk & Madu displays the same careful compilation [maybe resulting from some childhood dreams?] Simple Toast can even arrive with or without the crust, with peanut butter, vegemite [definitely an Aussie influence here], nutella or jam. Little Soldiers are two soft boiled eggs with vegemite toasties for dipping.

Great taste, as healthy as you want it and incredible value as all pricess are inclusive of tax and service, no ++ here [the tourist nightmare]! What a way to start your day?
