The Laneway.....

Down the lane!

The Laneway is the latest restaurant offering at the luxurious Peppers Sentosa Resort [formerly Sentosa Villas], It follows many other gastronomic breakthroughs for Bali [Blossom, EVO and Salt Tapas] at this site, all of which have presented something new and interesting, all of which were of extremely high quality.

Peppers is a famous name in Australia for a range of boutique hotels that always feature a high level of cuisine, the type that attracts discerning guests. Peppers Hotels is a division of The Mantra Group, Australia's most successful and largest hotel management group.

The menu for The Laneway keeps a few old favourites from previous menus but in general provides quality comfort food, dishes that suit all tastes. In keeping with their philosophy there is quite a selection of tasty vegetarian and generally healthy food as well as all the usual specials for the carnivores. In a move to be applauded all gluten free dishes are so marked.

Just a snack or to start; the Cumin Spiced Beetroot dip is served with flat bread, the Pulled Pork Slider with Asian slaw and chili, mini crisp sesame seed buns that you take two bites from and just ?slide into your mouth! Perhaps a Garlic Crostini topped with avocado, date, Spanish onion, feta, tomato and basil or something more substantial, Grilled King Prawns, big juicy ones, covered with a mound of hummus and croutons, all wrapped together in a saffron yoghurt. The Japanese Chicken Miso is a soup with enoki mushroom, rice, garlic and ginger [GF].

All the salads are GF; Rocket with parmesan and balsamic, Tomato, buffalo mozzarella, pesto, balsamic and extra virgin oil, Fennel with rocket, chick pea, cherry tomato and jalapeno chili or Organic lettuce, tomato, red onion, cucumber, snow peas. Healthy and tasty all.

The taste of Asia begins with their Seafood Pad Thai [in reality Pad Thai Goong, tossed rice noodles with egg, crushed peanuts, prawns, eshallot, tofu and bean sprouts]. The Char-grilled Pork is amazingly tender, it is served with enoki mushroom, coriander, sesame seeds, lemongrass and ginger, the meat may be tender but it is strongly infused with flavour. Whilst the Vietnamese Chicken Salad is with crispy eshallot, and a green chili coconut dressing [GF].

An interesting main is the one that says Bali Red Duck even though it sounds Thai. It is their Red Duck Curry with apple eggplant, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, tamarind and rice, very Thai although the red curry is so mild a Thai would hardly recognise it! However it is a great dish and one that any lover of duck meat will enthuse over, the duck quarter, leg and half-breast, is so tender from the slow cooking process, yet retains all of its flavour.

Other mains include a Grilled chicken breast with preserved lemon, thyme & garlic wok-fried vegetables [GF], Pan-fried Salmon, truffle oil mashed potato and asparagus lemon butter. The Char-grilled Beef Sirloin, green beans, cherry tomatoes, anchovy butter is 200gm size, [GF]. Seared Barramundi [a large slab thereof] is stacked with cauliflower puree, fennel & crab salad [GF] and Cumin spiced Lamb Cutlets, eggplant caponata, pesto [GF] are another dish where taste is dominant.

A taste of Italy [a cuisine that everyone loves] includes Spaghetti with crab, blistered cherry tomatoes, rocket, white wine, spicy chilli oil, Farfalle topped with lamb shoulder ragout, tomato, rosemary and fried parsley whilst the Risotto is with leek, porcini mushroom, sage, white wine and parmesan [GF]

Desserts include a very rich Chocolate hazelnut semi-freddo, perfect for the chocoholics. The Mixed Berry eton mess sits on a biscuit basket surrounded by raspberry coulis, the type of dessert that is loved by all, children and adults alike. Other sweet items, as desserts should be, include a Cinnamon doughnut with Chantilly crème, dark chocolate and strawberry jam, the special Peppers Apple Pie is joined by perfect vanilla bean ice cream or there is a simple Lemon Tart with strawberries and fresh cream.

Where is The Laneway? Just down the lane past what was once The Living Room, at the end of which is the luxurious Peppers Sentosa Resort, the restaurant nestling comfortably beside the landscaped swimming pool, which makes you feel as if you are on holidays, even if you are not.

Food to enjoy, without spending an arm and a leg!
