Square could be transported to Bali's Seminyak area and would not be out of place; décor-wise, food-wise or service-wise. Only the prices would stand out as being different, they are much lower!
Pan-seared Fois Gras on Brioche, with apple curry, cranberry sauce and greens tossed with balsamic. An Oriental Salad of roasted chicken and seafood, with a citrus salsa and ginger soy sauce, or a Warm Beef Salad with roasted capsicum, blue cheese and balsamic.
Soups can be standard [Cream of Mushroom with ricotta and sundried tomato quenelle] or Asian [Fish Lips Soup with a touch of soy, sesame oil and egg drop].
The American 'Surf & Turf' seem popular here and often feature in the day's specials, but their Grilled Beef Medallions and King Prawn are standard menu features. They come with pepperonata, roasted onions, potato puree and mushroom jus. Australian steaks are very popular and are available as Tenderloin [with béarnaise sauce] or Rib-Eye [in a shallot and red wine glaze, with a tempura of vegetables]. Other standards include Roasted Stuffed Chicken Breast, Tuna Pepper Steaks and a Mixed Grill of Mahi-Mahi, King Prawn and Scallop sitting on a beetroot risotto.
Not to be overlooked at Square is their excellent, and even cheaper, menu for Indonesian and Chinese cuisine. Lumpia Udang Pedas are three medium-sized fat spring rolls [thin crisp rice paper] stuffed with prawn meat and vegetables. Ayum Sawir is shredded chicken in a chilli sauce, Sambal Goreng Udang is tiger prawns in a hot chilli sauce. Daging Sapi Masak Merica Hitam is traditional Chinese Beef in Black Pepper. Thin slices of beef that are surprisingly tender, as only the Chinese seem to know how to do it. Has to be local beef as it only costs Rp.45,000.
Special menus for the children, an excellent wine list with sensible prices and young enthusiastic but very professional serving staff all go to make a night at Square a highlight of any Lombok visit.
Latest Visit:
great news for Square and Lombok in general is the arrival of their new Executive Chef. Wayan Budiana. Wayan has for the past 8 years been the right hand man for Chris Salans at his world famous Ubud restaurant, Mozaic. Some exciting menu changes coming up soon!
