SoHo.....

London, New York and now Bali!

Soho in London's West End is the centre of nightlife and entertainment, everything from the latest upmarket trendy location to some of the seediest you could imagine. Soho in New York is a place of action and slightly classier. Now we have a SoHo in Bali! But this one is a restaurant, well a 24 hour American Diner to be precise.

Fancy a breakfast at 4.00 a.m. or 8.00 p.m? Want a full 3 course meal at 7.00 a.m? At SoHo it does not matter what or when, all is available. The serves are large, the prices are very reasonable and most surprisingly the food is rather good.

Seating is by a series of banquettes, sealed off from the passing road traffic and nicely air-conditioned. It is the first place in this over-crowded street to actually enjoy regular patronage during the day time, and it is amazing to see so many eating up in the pre-dawn hours after that heavy night at the disco.

Buffalo Wings [funny name for chicken] and Potato Skins [crisp fried with sour cream, bacon and chives] are amongst the American snacks you expect and do find here. The Baked Stuffed Clams are breaded and served on the shell. Cheese Fries are French fries with melted mozzarella and gravy. Nachos of course, and BBQ Chicken Quesadillas [shredded chicken, melted cheddar cheese, green onions and jalapeno peppers in a toasted tortilla] are more enticing anytime snacks. You can always take the easy way out with an Appetizer Combo Platter.

The breakfasts are hearty. All the usual are available; eggs any way, with bacon, sausages [Chorizo, Merguez, beef or pork], baked beans, mushrooms, or even steak. Naturally that American invention, Hash Browns, can be had with anything. I like Corned Beef Hash and here it comes with 2 eggs. Want something different for breakfast? Huevos Rancheros or a Breakfast Burrito [scrambled eggs wrapped in fresh tortilla with cheddar cheese, chorizo, peppers and salsa] should satisfy you.

The 3 Egg Omelettes cover just about any taste. There are Mexican [avocado, spinach, jalapeno and onions], Spanish [peppers, chorizo and onion], Greek [tomato and feta] as well as a myriad of other options. Being American you can always have Pancakes for breakfast if that is your want. French Crepes and Belgian Waffles are also on the menu.

Read the sandwich list and you will definitely think you are in a New York Deli! A Reuben tops the list; hot Pastrami with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and a Russian dressing between toasted slabs of rye bread, very good!. The SoHo Club sandwich sees sliced turkey combined with bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. For a change, try the Meatball Parmagiana!

The Burgers are what you would expect, and of course include all the basic options. There is also an Aussie [egg, bacon, cheese and beetroot], or Mushrooms and Swiss cheese and even a Chilli one. Sloppy Joe's for those who do not mind making a bit of a mess whilst eating. Soups include a Clam Chowder. No American menu would be complete with Hot Dogs. Have them plain or with chilli. The Chicago is with diced onions, mustard and a sweet relish. I like the Hot Dog with Baked Beans, sort of Anglo-American.

Throw in Pasta [Spaghetti & Meatballs] and salads and you have all of the things that you would have expected to find. What does come as a surprise, are the main courses. Good serves at reasonable prices of quality food. The SoHo Meatloaf is very good as are the enormous BBQ Pork Spare Ribs. Chicken Pot Pie is chunks of chicken with potatoes, peas, onions and carrots in a cream sauce, covered with a flaky pastry. The Smoked Pork Chops [an enormous 400 gr.] are with apple sauce and the Sante Fe Chicken is in a spicy tomato and coriander sauce. Fish can be grilled or enjoy a classic beer-battered Fish & Chips.

For dessert a Key Lime Pie or a New York Cheese Cake? There is a Maple Pecan Pie and many ice cream combinations. The kids are not forgotten with a selection of interesting things; fish or chicken fingers, mini-burgers, and even junior pancakes.

Ice Cream Sodas make a comeback at SoHo. Add your choice of flavours; Rose Petal & Lime, Lemon & Chilli, Melon Lime Bitters or a refreshing Mango & Lime.

SoHo is the perfect place to go, anytime you feel hungry or thirsty, 24 hours a day. It produces simple food, good quality and at very reasonable prices. What more could you want?
